Blu-ray Disc Encryptions: Regions and BD Region Hack

If you would like to watch Blu-ray disc without region limitation, this article below the definition region codes and how to bypass the blu-ray region codes built into their BD players
What are Blu-ray Disc region codes?

Region codes place geographical restrictions on where in the world a Blu-ray movie can be played. For example, a BD system bought in the USA region would play only Blu-ray movie disks with that area’s encoding.

Why are there BD region codes?
The purpose of region codes is twofold. First, it allows regional pricing to be affected by the movie studios. Since pricing will be very different around the world, the system prevents home users importing home movies bought overseas at a lower price. Secondly, it allows the control of regional release of movie titles. Often, for instance, Hollywood films are available to buy on disk in the USA and Europe before other parts of the globe. With regional encoding, the studios can prevent unlicensed movie imports so giving distributors around the world control of supply.

The region codes are entirely voluntary on the part of the studios releasing the disks, and Blu-ray movie releases need not have any region code, so called “region free” releases. If a Blu-ray movie is region free, it can be played on all systems regardless of region. Interestingly, many early releases of Blu-ray films were region free.

Blu-ray Disc regions: Region A, Region B, and Region C
The world is divided into three regions by the BDA (Blu-ray Disk Association): Region A, Region B and Region C. The following map shows the regions as defined.

A: East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, the Americas and their dependencies.
B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia), Oceania and their dependencies.
C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, central Eurasia and their dependencies.

Blu-ray Region Hack/Crack/Bypass
In any case, many people are trying to work out how to bypass the blu-ray region codes built into their BD players, but there are rarely successes. But there are another way to play Region A blu-ray discs on Region on B/ C BD players and PS3: Use BDMagic to rip commercial blu-ray discs to remove the regions, and play the unprotected blu-ray movie from hard drive. Blu-ray players and PS3 boxes support playback of M2TS, MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, etc.

Moreover, Pavtube programs support adding *.srt and *.ass subtitles into video and merge into one file for output.

Support converting 3D to 3D:

The highly recommended features is that it now support converting Blu-ray/DVDs to 3D Video, which means you can enjoy you Blu-ray/DVD movies on your 3D TV or Media Players with Side-by-Side(SBS), Top-Bottom, or Anaglyph 3D in MKV/MP4/MOV/WMV/AVI format. 2. Support H.265/HEVC decode
3. Support H.265/HEVC encode
4. Support latest Blu-ray movies.

The bad: It lets you trim a specific duration from a movie, but not allows you to split movie/divide a movie evenly into multiple segments.

The bottom line: With decent decrypting capability, high quality video output and considerate backup solution and specific format templates for versatile PMP devices, Pavtube BDMagic ranks top on the Blu-ray ripping application list.

Top 2. DVDfab Blu-ray Ripper – Good

Price: $60

The good: When it comes to decrypting/hacking Blu-ray discs and DVDs, DVDfab is about as good as it gets. DVDfab Blu-ray Ripper well deserves its high reputation in decryption, and it handles not only AACS, BD+, Region code restriction, but also Cinavia protected Blu-rays. By taking advantage of CUDA accelerating, the conversion time is greatly shorted. If you want to rip a Blu-ray to MKV and keep 2 audio language and external subtitles, DVDfab would be your choice.

The bad: It is lacking of DVD ripping feature. It does not support AMD APP encoding. The interface is not very intuitive. And DVDfab Blu-ray Ripper costs more than its alternatives.

The bottom line: DVDfab Blu-ray Ripper decrypts and rips Blu-ray title to various video files playable on next generation consoles like PS3 and Xbox 360, HD player like WD TV Live, or mobile devices like iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc.

Editors' note: DVDfab has a comprehensive forum where you can communicate with other users and get helpful advices. There’s not support email but you can submit your problem to DVDfab.

Top 3. Leawo Blu-ray Ripper – Good

Price: $44.95

The good: Leawo Blu-ray Ripper comes with the popular feature to convert 2D to 3D for users to enjoy the popular 3D effect and exports various HD and popular common video formats (M2TS, AVI, MP4, WMV, FLV, MPEG, MOV, MKV, RMVB, etc). Leawo Blu-ray Ripper has stunning trim and crop feature- it trims movie more accurate and crops video more considerate than its competitors. It can load multiple Blu-ray and DVD movies at a time. If you have tons of movies waiting to rip and feel like having a Blu-ray Ripper queue them several movies for running overnight, Leawo is recommended.

The bad: Not recognizing Blu-ray ISO or forced subtitle (if there is). GPU encoding is restricted to Nvidia’s CUDA only. There’s no backup option for keeping original movie quality.

The bottom line: Leawo Blu-ray Ripper is a nice tool for DVD and Blu-ray ripping. There may be some improvements for Leawo to make but it already performs well enough for average users to convert/put Blu-ray and DVD movies to iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Wii, etc.

Editors' note: We noticed that audio quality is noticeably degraded when ripping Blu-ray with Leawo Blu-ray Ripper.

Top 4. Aimersoft Blu-ray Ripper – Fair

Price: $45.95

The good: By taking advantage of AMD APP, Intel? Quick Sync Video and NVIDIA? CUDA? technology, Aimersoft Blu-ray ripper converts movies faster and saves your time. It rips Blu-ray/DVD into almost all popular video formats (MP4, AVI, MOV, etc) and features versatile format templates for smartphones, game consoles and MP3 players. Its “Backup” function let users envelop a whole Blu-ray movie into a MKV/DVD into VOB without quality loss. If you’re looking for a way putting movies onto a HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony, or Motorola smartphone, the Aimersoft Blu-ray Ripper is worth checking out.

The bad: It does not support Blu-ray ISO or BDMV structure. There’s no option for preserving only forced subtitles. Most Blu-ray Discs are not loading to the software.

The bottom line: Aimersoft Blu-ray Ripper handles DVD ripping as good as any other rippers, but the company really needs to work hard and step forward in Blu-ray Disc cracking. Other than that, Aimersoft Blu-ray Ripper is impressively fast and helpful.

Editors' note: It seems that Aimersoft does not handle Blu-ray AACS and BD+ encryption properly and the software keeps popping up a message that we should contact customer support during our testing- the customer support staff offers but apologize though.

Top 5. Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper – Poor

Price: $24.98

The good: Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper can convert both standard Blu-ray videos and 3D Blu-ray videos to SD and HD video formats such as MKV, AVI, WMV, TS, etc. And it can preserve 3D effects when your source is 3D Blu-ray movie. NVIDIA CUDA and AMD APP graphic acceleration technology has been introduced to bring faster conversion experience.

The bad: The app does not decrypt Blu-ray protections and requires AnyDVD HD to be installed in advance for Blu-ray ripping. DVD ripping is not supported.

The bottom line: Xilisoft Blu-ray Ripper does not rip movies from Blu-ray Disc, but if you have had the Blu-ray cracked and saved onto computer hard drive, this tool would be helpful and useful for you to enjoy movies on iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, Xbox, Zune, NDS, Wii, and 3D smartphones.

Editors' note: This tool is not recommended unless when you want to convert 3D Blu-ray and keep 3D effect.

User-friendly Blu-ray Ripper: ByteCopy vs DVDfab, Which one is best?

Description: Which is more user-friendly Blu-ray Ripper on the market from three aspect: disc loading, backing up Blu-ray/DVD main movie in m2ts without any quality loss, profile customizing, multiple audio tracks and subtitle streams retaining, srt/ass/ssa subtitle adding, output multi tracks MKV/MP4/MOV and converting. DVDfab? Pavtube ByteCopy? The article will show you.

No matter you are a newbie or professional who wanna get Blu-ray Disc collection backed up to computer hard drive or ripped Blu-ray movies to other video format for playback on new iPad 3, iPad mini, Apple TV 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Tab 3, Google Nexus 7, Surface, Kindle Fire HD, etc, it is not easy to find the suitable tool because there is so many on the market.

In below article I compare two most popular and hottest tools on the market from three aspects, disc loading, profile customizing and converting, hope it can help you more or less and you can make a much easier choice.

Prepared tools:
  • DVDFab trial version
  • Pavtube ByteCopy trial version
  • An external Blu-ray Disc drive
  • A Blu-ray Disc (take Avatar for example)

Part 1. Load Blu-ray Disc.

DVDFab: I insert the disc before running DVDFab, and when I open the software it automatically detect the disc and start loading. While it seems like that DVDFab cannot correctly detect the BD region code. My Blu-ray Disc Avatar is region A and region B, while after loading into DVDFab, it shows this disc is from region C by default and I have to manually change to correct region for successful disc loading.

Meanwhile it takes 3-5 minutes to finish disc loading process, and there is no estimated loading time period so I have no idea how long it will take until it is complete after 5 minutes.

ByteCopy: I installed Pavtube ByteCopy on the same computer and click this "Load Disc" icon to import same Avatar Blu-ray Disc, I do not need to choose BD Region Code or anything else, and it only takes about 10 seconds to finish disc loading.

Plus, there is a percentage showing the progress of disc loading so I would know when the disc can be successfully imported.

Part 2. Custom profile settings.

1. Disc audio streams and subtitle tracks selection.

DVDFab: The GUI of DVDFab is very fresh and I could easily know the functions of every button, like the "Edit" icon for cropping and resizing source disc, the device image or "Profile" icon for output format settings, the "Advanced Settings" for customizing profile parameters, etc.

But I had trouble finding the icon to selecte subtitle and audio track in the first place, and accidentally I put my mouse on the selected Disc title, now I see the drop-down list of subtitle and audio tracks.

ByteCopy: There are obvious icons on Pavtube GUI so I can easily set up the desired subtitle track and audio stream.

2. Video editing option.

DVDFab offers two video editing options, one is Resize output movie resolution and another is Crop unwanted video black bars.

In ByteCopy Video Editor Tab, I find other options beside crop and resize, including trimming, adding text/image/video watermark, adding video effect, audio editor and attaching srt/ass/ssa subtitles, etc. Meanwhile, on ByteCopy GUI, I am able to merge several video clips into one or split one large movie into several segments.

Part 3. Start conversion.

1. Automatic rename function.

DVDFab: Once complete profile settings, I click the big "Start" button to convert my Avatar Blu-ray. While here comes an error message which shows "The file already existed, do you want to overwrite it?" because I did a similar conversion before. If I choose "Yes", my current ripped movie would overwrite the previous one and the previous ripped movie is gone forever, but if I choose "No", the conversion just aborts and tells me "Process Failed", so weird.

Later I realize that I have to manually rename the movie before starting conversion to avoid this error message again.

ByteCopy: I completely rip this movie without renaming the file and Pavtube ByteCopy does not pop up any similar error, instead it would add a number like 0, 1, 2,…at then end of the output movie name, so I will not loose any of the movies I ripped, this amazes me.

3. Locate output file.

In DVDFab, I cannot find any button that would lead me to the created movie, it means I have to remember to file path I set up then open computer hard drive to look for that file; in Pavtube ByteCopy, it is considerate to put "Open" icon on GUI to locate the ripped movie, or I could click this "Open output folder" on conversion UI as well.

Below is my point of view about these two BD ripping tool, DVDFab and Pavtube ByteCopy, and considering to user-friendly aspect, I prefer Pavtube ByteCopy.

How to keep Dolby Digital 5.1/Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio when ripping Blu-ray movies?

How to keep best audio quality(Dolby Digital 5.1/Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio) when backup/ripping Blu-ray Disc to PC? This is a frequently asked question. such as:
"What I am wanting to do is be able to take my 100+ Blu-rays that i have bought and convert them into a digital format and put them on my pc so I can just watch movies off the pc and not the blu-ray disc. I also have 7.1 surround sound as well so if there is a way to keep that it would be nice."
In the Blu-ray specification, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, LPCM, Dolby Digital, DTS and PCM are optional codecs for Blu-ray audio encoding. Earlier Blu-ray Discs save audio in Dolby Digital and DTS codec, most recent Blu-ray movies usually comes with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA audio tracks to deliver higher quality audio with 7.1 channels. Not every AV receiver/amplifier can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA audio, but most of them support Dolby Digital, i.e., AC-3 5.1 audio codec. When ripping Blu-ray Disc for playing back with PC and HD media players, better check the supported codec of your device first to set a best fit for your player.

Refer to below how to keep Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio when ripping Blu-ray Discs with Pavtube ByteCopy, it is a best BD ripping tool and backup disks without quality loss, allow full preservation of all audio tracks, subtitles and chapter markers, what's more, it saves 7.1 surround audio from original disks, just like you mentioned.
Software availability:
  1. Pavtube ByteCopy Trial version - A trial is free but functional-restricted. Lossless output can be used 3 times only. You may download a trial and see how it works.
  2. Pavtube ByteCopy Retail version. A full version is offered at $42 by Pavtube Studio.
How to keep Dolby Digital 5.1/Dolby True HD 7.1 audio when ripping Blu-ray movies?

Step 1. Hook up an external BD drive with my desktop (if there is not an internal one), and place a Blu-ray Disc into the BD drive.

Step 2. Run Pavtube ByteCopy software and click the "Load BD/DVD" icon to import movie files from Blu-ray Disc.

keep Dolby Digital 5.1/Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio

Step 3. Select the whole disc, and click the "Edit Disc" button. Now the "Edit Disc" screen pops up. Here you decide whether keep the original Dolby True HD 7.1/Dolby Digital 5.1 audio or encode the audio streams into Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks.

  1. To pass-through original TrueHD/Dolby Digital/DTS/PCM audio, just select "lossless" quality in "Format" box. In this way you get lossless audio streams as they are burned into BD. Dolby TrueHD track will be copied and packed into generated MKV file without transcoding. But note that the original BD may not contain Dolby TrueHD audio.
  2. To transcode the BD audio streams into Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, you may select "HD Player" and press "Settings". In this way you get H.264/AC3 encoded MKV file.
Step 4. Click the "Convert" button to start ripping the Blu-ray movie to MKV file. After conversion I click "Browse Export Path" and get an MKV file. Pavtube ByteCopy extracts the main movie with all subtitles from disc and seals the contents with encoded AC3 audio streams into MKV container, which preserves the best possible quality.

Additional Tip: How to check audio information of the Blu-ray Disc?

Pavtube ByteCopy lets you check the audio info. Once the movie source is opened you will see its contents as a tree structure. Expand the directory to check file information. "Title1 (Main Title)" contains Blu-ray movie, and other Titles bonus and extra features. You can find Audio info such as codec, channels and language under "Title1(Main Title)".
